HKQ Kids To Give Free Bike Helmets
To 1,200 Area Children

Responding to growing demand, the Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn Fund for Children’s Advocacy, also known as HKQ Kids, will give away 1,200 bicycle helmets – 200 more than last year – to area children during the July Fourth fireworks celebration at Kirby Park.

“Too often, we see young children in our communities riding bikes without helmets” said Attorney Michelle M. Quinn, spokeswoman for HKQ Kids. “The vast majority of serious injuries and deaths from bicycle accidents involving kids result from head injuries – injuries that could be prevented by wearing a helmet.”

As part of its mission to promote child safety, HKQ Kids will set up a booth at the July Fourth fireworks celebration at Kirby Park and give 1,200 bike helmets to eligible children free of charge. The booth will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Children must be 12 or under and must be accompanied by an

adult to receive a helmet. Over the past three years, HKQ Kids has given bike helmets to 2,640 children from Northeastern Pennsylvania.

“We’ve been thrilled with the response to our helmet program the past three years, but we always seem to run short, so this year we’re stocking up with 200 more helmets,” said Attorney Quinn. “We want every child to have a bike helmet because we know they will help prevent serious injuries and save lives.”

All free bike helmets distributed by HKQ Kids meet U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards, and each helmet comes equipped with a user’s manual and CPSC label of certification.

HKQ Kids was established in October 2005 by Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn to promote child safety through community outreach and educational programs. It is administered by the Luzerne Foundation.
