KINGSTON (June 17, 2010) – For the third year in a row, the Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn Fund for Children’s Advocacy, also known as HKQ Kids, will be giving away 1,000 free children’s bicycle helmets during the July Fourth fireworks celebration at Kirby Park.
“Over the past two years, we have given away 1,640 bike helmets, but we still see young children in our communities riding bicycles without helmets,” said Attorney Michelle M. Quinn, spokeswoman for HKQ Kids. “It’s against the law for children under 12 to ride without helmets, but it’s also extremely dangerous. The vast majority of serious injuries and deaths from bicycle accidents involving kids result from

head injuries – injuries that could be prevented by wearing a helmet.”
As part of its mission to promote child safety, HKQ Kids will set up a booth at the July Fourth fireworks celebration atKirby Park and give away 1,000 free bike helmets to eligible children. The booth will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Last year, HKQ Kids gave away 1,000 helmets and in 2008, it gave away 640 helmets. Children must be 12 or under and must be accompanied by an adult to receive a helmet.
“We’ve been thrilled with the response over the past two years, and we hope this year’s event is just as successful,” said Attorney Quinn. “We know that equipping children with approved bicycle helmets will help prevent serious injuries and save lives.”
The free helmets are manufactured by Bell and are approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Bell, founded in 1954, is a worldwide leader in safety equipment for cycling, motorcycling and auto racing. More champions, from Olympic cycling to Grand Prix racing to the Indy 500, have worn Bell helmets than all other helmet brands combined.
HKQ Kids was established in October 2005 by the law firm of Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn to promote child safety through community outreach and educational programs. The fund is administered by the Luzerne Foundation.
