Helmet Giveaway 'Tremendous Success'

KINGSTON (July 5, 2008) – The Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn Fund for Children’s Advocacy, also known as HKQ Kids, gave away more than 640 free bicycle helmets to area children during its inaugural Bike Helmet Giveaway, which took place during the 2008 Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration in Kirby Park. HKQ Kids gave away all 500 helmets it had on hand and ordered over 140 more for children and families who requested them.

"We believe the program was a tremendous success," said Attorney Michelle M. Quinn, spokeswoman for HKQ Kids. "It's extremely gratifying to know that, as a result of our efforts, more than 640 children in our communities will be safer when they are riding their bikes. We sincerely believe this program will reduce injuries and save lives."

Attorney Quinn pointed out that Pennsylvania state law requires children under 12 years old to wear helmets. That's because statistics show that the vast majority of serious child bicycle accidents involve some kind of head injury.

As part of its mission to promote child safety, HKQ Kids set up a booth at the Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration at Kirby Park and gave away the bicycle helmets to children 12 or under. The booth was run by attorneys and staff from the law firm of Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn.

The helmets are manufactured by Bell and are approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Bell, founded in 1954, is a worldwide leader in safety equipment for cycling, motorcycling and auto racing. More champions, from Olympic cycling to Grand Prix racing to the Indy 500, have worn Bell helmets than all other helmet brands combined.

HKQ Kids was established in October 2005 by the law firm of Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn to promote child safety through community outreach and educational programs.
