Children's Foundation
To Give Away Bike Helmets
Foundation
established by area law firm will have booth at July Fourth fireworks
KINGSTON (June 10, 2008) – The Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn
Fund for Children’s Advocacy, also known as HKQ Kids, will be giving away hundreds of free children’s bicycle helmets during the upcoming July Fourth fireworks celebration at Kirby Park.
“We constantly see young children riding bicycles without helmets in our communities,” said Attorney Michelle M. Quinn, spokeswoman for HKQ Kids. “Not only is it against the law for children under 12 to ride without helmets, it’s extremely dangerous. The vast majority of serious childhood injuries and deaths from bicycle accidents result from head injuries.”
As part of its mission to promote child safety, HKQ Kids will set up a booth at the July Fourth fireworks celebration at Kirby Park and give away hundreds of helmets to eligible children. HKQ Kids has ordered 500 helmets for the giveaway and will order more, if necessary, to make sure every child who needs a helmet gets one. Children must be 12 or under and must be accompanied by an adult in order to receive a helmet.
“We believe that equipping children with approved bicycle helmets is a great way to have a direct impact on the safety of children in our communities,” said Attorney Quinn. “We hope this program will help avoid serious injuries and save lives.”
The free helmets are manufactured by Bell and are approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Bell, founded in 1954, is a worldwide leader in safety equipment for cycling, motorcycling and auto racing. More champions, from Olympic cycling to Grand Prix racing to the Indy 500, have worn Bell helmets than all other helmet brands combined.
HKQ Kids was established in October 2005 by the law firm of Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn to promote child safety through community outreach and educational programs.
