Summer Play, Preventing Outside Injuries

Longer, warmer days and bright sunshine is an invitation for outside play, especially trying to squeeze in every moment before school starts again. A few simple steps will help you and your kids stay safe so you can enjoy all that the rest of summer in northeast pa has to offer!

Stay hydrated

Many are surprised to learn that one of the first signs of heatstroke is lack of sweat. Your body stops sweating when your internal cooling system lacks the ability to cool down. Symptoms include pale skin, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, high body temperature, racing heart and rapid breathing. Dehydration symptoms include headache, dry skin, sleepiness, dry, sticky mouth and thirst. Both heatstroke and dehydration are preventable.

  • Drink plenty of water or fluids with electrolytes.
  • Take breaks in the shade.
  • Wear lightweight clothing.
  • Avoid the peak of the heat in the middle of the day, if possible.

Stop the burn

Protect your skin and your kids skin, and reduce the risk of skin damage that can lead to premature aging and skin cancer. Enjoy the warmth of the sun without the effects of the damaging rays.

  • Apply sunscreen at least every two hours, and more often if you are in water or near the shore. Apply it at least 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun. Make it part of your daily routine.
  • Make sure to apply sunscreen on your ears, lips, feet and scalp. These are the areas that most people forget.
  • Seek out shade when possible.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses.

Stop the bites

Everyone knows how annoying insects can be. Avoid the itchy and sometimes painful bites as much as possible.

  • Cover your skin if you are walking through the woods or in grassy areas.
  • Examine your skin thoroughly on a daily basis, particularly for ticks.
  • Consider using a bug spray.
  • Consider natural deterrents such as oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • If you are allergic, always carry your medication with you.

Control your allergies

The beautiful blooms and smells of fresh cut grass can send some into a session of watery eyes, itchy noses and sneezes.

  • Stay indoors when the pollen count is extremely high.
  • Take your allergy or asthma medication as prescribed by your physician.
  • Control the amount of dust in your home. Pollen and other allergens can enter your home through open windows and even your air conditioner.
  • Change your sheets often. Allergens can accumulate on your hair and skin and deposit on your sheets during the night.

Be Alert and Aware

  • Summertime brings more traffic, more children playing outside, and riding their bikes. Keep your eyes open!
  • DO NOT use your phone while driving. Leave your phone alone while you are on the road.
  • Make sure your kids and you wear your Bike Helmets while riding your bikes.
  • Review hand signals with your kids, so others know what direction they are travelling on their bikes.
  • Drive carefully and stay alert to hidden driveways, and through areas populated with little kids.
