Bicycle Safety – Enjoy the Ride!

Listen to the HKQ Kids' Radio spot:

Kids love to ride their bikes. It’s fun, offers a little freedom and of course, exercise. It’s a great family activity too. A few simple steps can help keep your kids safe while enjoying the ride.

Properly fitting helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45%, yet less than half of our kids wear bike helmets.  Your kids’ helmets should meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) standards.

A few tips to stay safe:

  • Wear a properly-fitted helmet. It’s the best way to prevent head injuries.
  • Make sure your kids are riding a bike that fits their height and weight. Don’t purchase a bike that they will “grow into”. When seated, their feet should be able to touch the ground.
  • Make sure reflectors are secure, brakes work properly, gears shift smoothly, and tires are tightly secured and properly inflated.
  • Be conscientious of clothing. Long or loose clothing can get caught in bike chains or wheel spokes.
  • When possible, ride on the sidewalk, or off the road. If it’s not possible, ride in the same direction as traffic, and as far to the right as you can.
  • Teach your kids to use hand signals and follow the rules of the road.
  • Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between cars.
  • Wear bright colors and use lights, especially if riding when it starts to get dark.
  • Ride with your children.
  • Know where your older children are riding.
  • Remind your kids to pay attention to the road, and stay off their phones.
  • Set a good example, wear a helmet and stay off your phone as well.

Stay safe, have fun, get out and enjoy the ride!
