Being a Team Player

Adolescence is the period between childhood and adulthood ranging from age ten to nineteen. This period is generally a time of great growth for a person both physically and emotionally. With the right positive influences, a person can grow to be a very responsible adult. Sports are just one of those influences that help students thrive. Team sports significantly benefit adolescents to help them become more well-rounded. Sports participation during adolescence promotes positive social and emotional development and improves physical
well-being.

Benefits of adolescent participation on sports teams:

  • Strengthens verbal communication skills instead of communicating via texting or social media.
  • Helps establish lasting friendships.
  • Teaches the true value of teamwork which will transfer over to being proficient in working well with others later in life.
  • Exercise releases endorphins to help reduce unhealthy amounts of stress allowing better function.
  • Teaches coping skills such as becoming motivated and never giving up after experiencing loss.
  • Builds self-esteem because they feel good when they succeed and have their teammates and coaches cheering them on.
  • Adolescents who play sports are more goal oriented and believe more in success.
  • Helps keep them in shape and manage their weight.
  • Strengthens primary muscle groups and maintains bone mass.
  • Lowers blood pressure, bad cholesterol, boosts energy, and improves sleep.
  • Decreases risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
  • Enhances academic performance by improving alertness, cognitive function, and concentration. Athletes have improved grades of 10% or higher in various areas of study.
  • Team sports help build discipline that will carry over into other aspects of their lives.

It is very easy to join a sports team as well. Communities usually have sports teams such as basketball, baseball, football, and soccer that can be joined by simply signing up and paying a small fee. Your child could also sign up to play for their school team if they are really interested in the sport. If there is interest in traveling, traveling sports teams are also an option.
