Winter Play Safety Tips

Playing in the snow is part of being a kid in Northeastern PA. Nothing beats that beautiful crystal-like snow and the first snowman of the season. And, we are surrounded by some of the area’s top ski resorts, where snowboarders and skiers push their limits.

We know that bumps and bruises are bound to happen, especially when you have kids – but some of the more serious injuries are easily preventable.

Each year, more than 47,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to snowboarding, sledding, ice skating and skiing, with many of their injuries being preventable.

Here are a few tips to stay safe while having fun in the cold:

  • Wear proper gear, including shin guards, mouth guards, and especially helmets for sports such as skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey and snowmobiling.
  • Encourage kids to drink plenty of water before, during and after activity. Dehydration can happen in winter months too.
  • Wear warm clothing, and go inside frequently to warm up. Change any wet clothing, including gloves or mittens. Wear hats, boots, gloves, and a warm coat.
  • Have a few extra sets of gloves available, so little fingers can stay warm and dry.
  • Use sunscreen. Sunburns are not exclusive to summer-time.
  • Don’t allow kids to play in the road or too close to the road at any time, particularly during the winter when it may not be clear where sidewalks stop and roads begin.
  • Accompany your kids on any frozen bodies of water, and adhere to any signage that might indicate thin ice.
