Safe Fun in the Sun

Listen to the HKQ Kids' Radio spot:

The days are finally getting longer and the temperatures are getting warmer, after a very long winter in Northeast PA. That means kids are spending more time outdoors.

A few precautions can help keep you and your kids safe, so you can enjoy all our brighter days have to offer.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and decaffeinated drinks. Perspiration can be quickly dehydrating.

Protect with sunscreen. Use at least an SPF 15 and apply every two hours. Wear a hat and sunglasses and know the daily UV index. Even if it’s not very hot, the sun can still be very strong.

Be aware of the road. Warm weather brings out more bikes and kids playing outside. Make sure your kids are aware of the rules of the road. While driving, put the phone down and pay closer attention to the road and your surroundings. Make sure your kids are securely fastened in their car seats.

Wear helmets when riding a bike or motorcycle. A properly fitted helmet can protect you from head injury and may save your life. Always wear a helmet when riding a bike or motorcycle. And, parents, please wear your helmets too. Kids whose parents wear helmets, will wear theirs too.

Grill it safe. Warmer weather means more outdoor grilling. Keep a 3 foot, no kids, no pets zone around your grill. Keep lighters and matches away from your kids, and make sure your grill is away from your home, railings, out from under eaves, and clear of any overhanging branches. Use the same rule of thumb for fire pits.

Check your skin. Spring and summer bring extra bug bites and ticks. Examine yourself and your kids on a regular basis, especially after being outside for extended periods of time.

Talk over these tips with everyone in your family. A few minutes of safety precautions will help you to relax and enjoy the warmer and sunnier days!
